Most people in Bangladesh who want a garden don’t know what to ask a landscape design company, what the job actually involves, or what a fair price looks like. The result is often a beautiful design that dies in the first monsoon — or a quote that mysteriously doubles halfway through.

This guide is a long, honest answer to every question we’ve been asked in 10 years of doing landscape work in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Cox’s Bazar. What Does a Landscape Design Company in Bangladesh Actually Do?

A landscape design company plans, designs, and builds outdoor and semi-outdoor green spaces rooftops, balconies, courtyards, front yards, and commercial grounds. The work covers site analysis, 3D design, plant selection for the local climate, hardscape construction (patios, walkways, water features), irrigation and drainage engineering, and post-installation maintenance.

Most Bangladeshi homes and buildings are not designed with landscaping in mind. The roof is exposed concrete, the yard is bare earth, and the boundary wall is plain brick. A landscape company turns those unused surfaces into functional, beautiful, climate-appropriate green space.

Why Bangladesh is harder than anywhere else

If you have tried to keep plants alive on a Dhaka rooftop, you already know the country’s landscape problems are not the same as the West’s. Generic advice from international landscape books doesn’t work. Here is what makes Bangladesh different, and what any credible landscape company has to address:

Monsoon waterlogging

Dhaka gets 2,300–3,000 mm of rain per year, mostly between June and September. A single 200 sqft rooftop with poor drainage can collect 2,000+ litres of standing water in one storm. That water adds two tonnes of dead load to your slab, seeps into cracks, kills plant roots through root rot, and becomes a dengue mosquito breeding ground. Most landscape projects in Bangladesh fail in year one because drainage is treated as an afterthought. It cannot be.

Structural load limits

Most Dhaka buildings especially pre-2010 constructions were not engineered to hold a green roof. Standard residential slabs in Bangladesh tolerate 150–200 kg per square metre (psm) of live load. Wet soil alone weighs 1,400–1,800 kg per cubic metre. A 6-inch deep planter bed can easily exceed the slab’s rated capacity. A landscape company in Bangladesh that doesn’t calculate load is not really a landscape company it is a liability.

Heat stress on plants

April–May daytime temperatures regularly hit 36–40°C in Dhaka, with surface temperatures on concrete roofs exceeding 55°C. Tropical ornamentals imported from Europe die within weeks. The plant list has to be local-native or heat-tested tropical, not “what looked good in the catalogue.”

Space constraints

Average Dhaka plot size: 1,500–2,500 sqft. Average usable outdoor area: under 200 sqft. Landscape design here is not about spreading a lawn it is about vertical thinking, container gardening, and micro-zoning.

Air pollution

Dhaka consistently ranks among the top five most polluted capitals globally. Dust and PM2.5 coat leaf surfaces, block sunlight, and suffocate plants. Plants selected for clean air (like English ivy) fail here; plants with waxy, hairy, or tough leaves (like Bougainvillea, Plumeria) thrive.

Contractor reliability

This is the silent problem. Most “landscapers” in Bangladesh are informal day-rate gardeners with no design training, no engineering knowledge, and no accountability. A landscape “designer” who shows up with a sample board of tiles and no drawings, no load calculation, and no plant species list is a contractor, not a designer.

For a typical rooftop project, the most common combination is #1 (rooftop) + #6 (hardscape) + #7 (irrigation). For a residential yard, #4 + #6. For a hotel or resort, #5 + #7 + #8 (maintenance contract).

A defined process is what separates a designer from a contractor. Below is exactly what we do, what you get at each step, and how long it takes.

Free site consultation

We visit your site in Dhaka (or anywhere in Bangladesh). 60–90 minute walkthrough. We listen to what you want, take measurements, photos, sun-path notes, and give you a verbal feasibility assessment on the spot.

Deliverable: verbal go/no-go, rough cost band. This is free, no obligation.

Site survey and analysis

Detailed measurement, soil testing (pH, salinity, percolation), structural inspection of slab/rooftop, existing vegetation assessment, sun-path study, utility mapping.

Deliverable: Site Analysis Report (PDF, 15–25 pages)

Concept design

2–3 concept options (mood boards, bubble diagrams, zoning). Plant list with preliminary species, material palette, preliminary budget range.

Deliverable: Concept Design Package (PDF + printed board)

3D visualisation

Photorealistic 3D renders of the chosen concept. Multiple angles, day + night views, plant labelling in the render.

Deliverable: 5–10 high-resolution renders + walkthrough video

Detailed design and engineering

Construction drawings, structural drawing for any load-bearing elements, irrigation drawing, drainage drawing, electrical drawing (lighting, pump), detailed plant list with quantities, material specifications, final bill of quantities.

Deliverable: Drawing Set (PDF + AutoCAD) + BoQ

Installation

Site mobilisation, waterproofing (5–7 days for rooftops), drainage installation, hardscape construction, irrigation installation, planter fabrication, soil filling and planting, lighting installation.

Handover and maintenance plan

Joint walkthrough with you, plant care briefing, maintenance schedule handover, 90-day establishment care (we visit once a month for 3 months), warranty activation.

For 500 sqft, expect 3–4 weeks of installation. For 2,000+ sqft commercial, 6–10 weeks. We give you a written timeline before we start, and we hold to it.

The technical side: how we engineer a landscape that survives Bangladesh

This is the depth most landscape pages skip. It is also why a project built by us lasts 10+ years and a project built by a “gardener” lasts 18 months.

Structural load calculation

Every rooftop garden starts with a load assessment. The standard residential slab in Bangladesh is rated for 150–250 kg per square metre (psm) live load plus 350–500 kg/psm dead load (the slab itself).

A landscape on top of that slab adds:

Waterproofing (3 layers): 8–12 kg/psm
Drainage mat: 4–6 kg/psm
Lightweight soil (50mm depth): 40–60 kg/psm
Fibreglass planter: 8–15 kg/psm
Plants (mature): 15–40 kg/psm
People + furniture (live load): 150–200 kg/psm

That adds up to 225–333 kg/psm exceeding the rated live load of most older buildings. Two solutions:

Lightweight system (used in 90% of our projects): expanded clay aggregate instead of soil (1/4 the weight), fibreglass planters (1/6 the weight of brick), total weight brought down to 140–180 kg/psm within tolerance.

Structural retrofit (for heavy landscape, older buildings): we work with a structural engineer to add steel beams or a partial slab thickening. Cost: ৳1,500–3,000 per sqft extra. Only needed for projects with large trees, water bodies, or heavy masonry.

We will not install a landscape on a slab that hasn’t been assessed. Ever.

Waterproofing

The single most expensive thing to fix wrong. A failed waterproofing layer means tearing up the entire garden to repair the ceiling below. We use a 3-layer system: bituminous or acrylic primer, APP/SBS modified bitumen membrane (4mm thick, torch-applied), and a geo-textile + cementitious protection layer. Warranty: 10 years on materials, 5 years on workmanship. We do not use single-coat “waterproof paint” it fails in 18 months in Bangladesh monsoon.

Drainage engineering

Drainage is not a hole in the corner. It is a system: sub-surface drainage layer (30mm drainage mat or Leca aggregate), minimum 1.5% slope across the entire planted area, drain channels at the edge of every planter (sized for 50mm/hr rainfall), connection to the building’s stormwater system or a soak pit, and sump + pump for flat roofs where gravity drainage is not possible. We flood-test every project for 2 hours before handover. No ponding, no seepage.

RAJUK compliance

RAJUK (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha) building codes do not yet have a specific clause for rooftop gardens, but related rules apply: live load on roof must not exceed structural design, no open flame (BBQs) on residential rooftops, water discharge must not flow to neighbouring plots, and setback rules apply for any structure above parapet height. We design within these constraints and flag any grey areas before installation.

How much does landscape design cost in Bangladesh?

Most Bangladeshi landscape pages do not publish pricing. We do, because the #1 question we get is “how much will this cost?” and pretending it varies wildly is not helpful. Here is our actual pricing tier structure.

Why Intros Space is a different kind of landscape design company in Bangladesh

Intros Space was founded in 2015 as an architectural and interior design studio. Landscape came later, after our clients kept asking “can you also do the outside?” Because we started from architecture, we treat a garden the way we treat a building with drawings, specs, and engineering. Most landscape companies in Bangladesh cannot produce a structural drawing, a waterproofing detail, or a drainage plan. We can and we do on every project.

We publish our pricing instead of hiding it. We warranty our work in writing including a 6-month plant replacement guarantee that almost no other Bangladesh landscape firm offers. The full warranty: 10 years on waterproofing materials, 5 years on waterproofing workmanship, 1 year on hardscape (pavers, structures, water features), 6 months on plants, and 90 days of post-handover site visits included.

For projects over 500 sqft, a structural engineer reviews the design before installation. This is included in our fee. For projects with heavy loads (large trees, water bodies, masonry structures), we co-sign the engineering certificate with our partner structural firm.

We work across Bangladesh. Primary market is Dhaka, but we have completed projects in Chattogram, Sylhet, Cox’s Bazar, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Rangpur. For projects outside Dhaka, we travel to the site for design and supervise installation remotely with a local partner contractor.

How much does landscape design cost in Bangladesh?

Professional landscape design in Bangladesh costs between ৳250 and ৳2,500 per square foot, depending on scope. A basic softscape refresh on a 200 sqft rooftop starts at ৳80,000. A full architectural landscape with engineering on a 1,000 sqft yard can run ৳6–12 lakh.

Can my old building support a rooftop garden?

Probably but only after a structural assessment. Buildings built before 2010 in Bangladesh typically tolerate 150–200 kg per square metre of live load. With a lightweight system (expanded clay, fibreglass planters, no masonry), the added load is 140–180 kg/psm. Older buildings may need steel beam retrofitting, which adds ৳1,500–3,000 per sqft. We assess before we design.

Which plants survive in Bangladesh's climate?

A small residential project (under 300 sqft) takes 5–6 weeks. Medium (300–1,000 sqft) takes 7–9 weeks. Large residential or commercial (1,000+ sqft) takes 3–6 months. We give you a written timeline before we start.

Do you provide garden maintenance after installation?

Native and naturalised tropical species survive. Top performers: Bougainvillea, Plumeria, Areca Palm, Tabebuia, Krishnachura, Hibiscus, Ixora, Jasmine, Lantana. Imported temperate plants (lavender, rosemary, juniper, bluegrass) die within weeks to months.

What is the difference between landscape design and interior design?

Interior design covers the inside of a building — rooms, walls, ceilings, furniture, finishes. Landscape design covers the outside or semi-outside — rooftops, yards, courtyards, facades, vertical walls, hardscape, and plants. Intros Space provides both services with different specialist teams.

Is a rooftop garden allowed under RAJUK building rules?

RAJUK building codes do not yet have a dedicated clause for rooftop gardens. Related rules apply: live load must not exceed structural design, no open flame on residential rooftops, water discharge must not affect neighbours, and structures above parapet height must follow setback rules. We design within all of these.

How do you handle monsoon waterlogging?

Three layers of protection: (1) 3-layer bitumen waterproofing with 10-year warranty, (2) sub-surface drainage rated for 50mm rain per hour, (3) rainwater harvesting integration where feasible. We flood-test every project for 2 hours before handover.

Do you work outside Dhaka?

Yes. We have completed projects in Chattogram, Sylhet, Cox’s Bazar, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barishal, and Mymensingh. For projects outside Dhaka, the most cost-effective approach is: one site visit for survey, remote design, and a local contractor for installation under our remote supervision. Travel cost is added to the design fee.

What is included in your landscape design package?
